EIEF, together with the Bank of Italy, is organizing a debate on how the European Union should address the challenges posed by the new geoeconomic competition. Since the end of World War II, it has been widely believed tha t strong commercial and financial integration could be a key factor in fost ering economic development and preserving peace. The resulting multilateral system – based on the free movement of goods, services, capital, people, a nd ideas – seemed capable of including not only Western democracies, but al so countries like China and Russia. However, the recent rise in geopolitica l tensions has revealed how integration itself can also become a source of vulnerability.
