DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE: Trade-offs in Repugnant Transactions: A Choice Experiment (with Julio Elia
s and Mario Macis)\n\n\n \nAbstract:\n Societies prohibit many transactions
considered morally repugnant, although potentially efficiency-enhancing. W
e conduct an online choice experiment to characterize preferences for the m
orality and efficiency of payments to kidney donors. The survey elicits opi
nions on several moral issues about allowing payments, shows different hypo
thetical supply effects of compensating donors, and asks respondents to exp
ress their support for different types of kidney procurement and allocation
systems that would include compensation. Although choices are based on hyp
otheticals, we design the survey to include elements of consequentiality an
d incentive compatibility. Through this experiment we are able to assess wh
ether cost-benefit considerations affect the acceptance of morally controve
rsial transactions. The analysis also provides insights to policymakers abo
ut the role of empirical evidence about the effects of compensation for kid
ney donors in informing the public debate.\n
