SUMMARY:Lunch Seminar: Maryam Saeedi - Carnegie Mellon University
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:\n\n(Dis)Information Wars\n\n\nAbstract:\nThe growth of big data and big da
ta technologies has greatly expanded information availability across the gl
obe. This has in turn led to the widespread use of social media platforms a
nd the emergence of these platforms as prominent vehicles for displaying di
ssidence during episodes of political unrest. A new approach taken by oppre
ssive governments to counter this trend is to spread false information on t
he platform and engage in a disinformation war. We use data from Farsi-Twit
ter during the recent wave of protests in Iran to understand the extent and
mechanism of disinformation wars. We identify accounts that engage in spre
ading disinformation and use the characteristics that predict such engageme
nt to assign a “disinformation score” to all Farsi-Twitter accounts. This s
core can guide safe users and inform policies to contain the spread of disi
nformation on social media. We run a number of counterfactual studies to te
st the effectiveness of various policy interventions.\n
