SUMMARY:Lunch Seminar: Oded Galor - Brown University
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:\n\nRoots of Inequality\n\n\nAbstract:\nWhy does inequality vary across soc
ieties? Why are some societies more unequal than others? We advance the hyp
othesis that in a market economy, where income differentials reflect variat
ions in productive traits, a significant share of cross-societal difference
s in inequality may reflect enduring variation in the degree of diversity w
ithin societies, rooted in the prehistoric Out-of-Africa migration. Pattern
s of inequality within the U.S. population are consistent with this hypothe
sis, suggesting that disparities among groups originating from different an
cestral societies are associated with the degree of diversity in productive
traits within those societies, shaped during humanity’s dispersal from Afr
ica. Consistent with the proposed mechanism, populations whose ancestors or
iginated closer to East Africa tend to exhibit greater dispersion in produc
tive traits—education, ability, and labor supply—channels that appear to me
diate the relationship between ancestral diversity and inequality.\n
